Just a follow up: running gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences button-layout 'close,minimize,maximize:appmenu' does nothing.

I've set it to: close,minimize,maximize:appmenu, but the buttons go to the right. When I start gnome-shell from gdm3, the buttons are left as expected.
