Public bug reported:
NVIDIA binary driver VER 340.17 is crashing steam. If I purge all NVIDIA
drivers Steam runs successfully from Nouveau, but seems to have
performance issues in game. Steam support was unhelpful and referred me
to anyone else.
Steam output from terminal is:
