It sounds like 3.34.2 might contain a fix so we should wait for that as a first step.

Previously this would only occur in windowed playback, which makes me strongly suspect it's an issue with compositor unredirecting. I initially suspected https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome- shell/issues/1788 , but it seems the fix for that was already backported. I installed arch linux on a separate partition and installed the newer gnome shell 3.34.2, and with the same video and settings the playback was smooth. I also tested under Ubuntu 18.04 and it was fine there as well.
