It sounds like 3.34.2 might contain a fix so we should wait for that as
a first step.

Title:
gnome shell fails to fullscreen unredirect

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
When playing videos in mpv set with fairly heavy settings under gnome
(x11), playback is choppy, even in fullscreen, after upgrading to
19.10. Previously this would only occur in windowed playback, which
makes me strongly suspect it's an issue with compositor unredirecting.
  I initially suspected https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-
shell/issues/1788 , but it seems the fix for that was already
backported. I installed arch linux on a separate partition and
installed the newer gnome shell 3.34.2, and with the same video and
settings the playback was smooth. I also tested under Ubuntu 18.04 and
it was fine there as well.
