External subtitles do not work with LG Smart TV
miniDLNA supports srt files so you don't have to implement something
else, but... Ubuntu 19.10 has built-in DLNA/UPnP AV services offered by
rygel package. It can be easily enabled via System Settings utility. It
would be great to solve this problem because users would not have to
install other software.
