usb audio partially broken

Incomplete
Bug description:
My Edirol UA25 USB soundcard no longer works correctly. I'm not sure when
this started happening but it must have been recently.
I've used the card without problems in Debian Lenny.
Whenever I play a sound through pulseaudio, everything is fine, I can
play sounds with mplayer using -ao alsa and playing sounds with aplay
works, too.
I installed linux-modules-backports-alsa which didn't help.
whenever I want to do some serious audio work, I get
