Title:
  Soundcard not detected - when monitor is detached - only as root

Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  sound works fine when my monitor was attached. I removed the monitor to put
it on another machine.
  I ssh'd into this machine and sound stopped working. mplayer would not work.
  Sound only works if I run mplayer with sudo.
  same goes for any sound application. alsamixer will not work as a user.
only sudo alsamixer

  $  alsamixer
  cannot open mixer: No such file or directory
  $ sudo alsamixer

  $ aplay -l
  aplay: device_list:223: no soundcards found...

  $ sudo aplay -l
