I confirm that it's still here on a fresh install Ubuntu 11.10 with Thunderbird 8.0 but with a twist: in the Unity and Gnome desktops a link gets created in the destination folder now. Unfortunately the link can't be opened with all applications and what if it's a link to an IMAP server and the user is offline? More info in the 377621 bug on the Mozilla tracker, comment 83. With MATE (the Mint desktop) I get the old error "The specified location is not supported". Canonical won't be interested in MATE but that difference in behavior could hint to origin of the bug.
By the way, the Mozilla bug 544738 which is displayed at the top of this page is a duplicate of 377621. Is it possible to refer to the original bug instead of the duplicate one?
