Title:
Missing volume icon + broken volume/brightness sliders

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  First:
On the status bar, there is no volume icon, just an empty space.
The icon only appears on logout.

  Second:
The volume and brightness sliders are broken, are always at 0 regardless to
the real volume (set either using alternative software/desktop or using
keyboard keys).
When you change the volume using the sliders, it really changes the volume
but keeps the slider at the value it was if you change the volume using another
way.
