This seems somewhat dependent on the screen resolution. At 1920x1080 (the most popular screen resolution) our default web browser is "Firefox Web br..." At 1366x768 (the next most popular screen resolution) it's "Firefox W..."
It looks like the GNOME stock application names have been optimised for this behaviour, being called short names like "Calendar", "Calculator", "Terminal", "Settings", "Fonts" which fit beneath their icons. Perhaps our stock .desktop files should be examined, and developers encouraged to use shorter names.
