cannot launch application from activities overview

Bug description:
After upgrading Ubuntu from 19.10 to 20.04 I'm not able to launch
applications from the overview window. If I right-click on the app,
add to favourites and then launch it from the dash it works, but if I
just left-click on the app icon nothing happens.
When launch fails in `journalctl /usr/bin/gnome-shell` I get this
entry: `clutter_input_device_ungrab: assertion
'CLUTTER_IS_INPUT_DEVICE (device)' failed`
The problem occurs with both X11 and Wayland sessions (although I only
checked the journalctl on X11)
