Yes the space could be relevant, search for "ignorespace" in bash's
manual.

Also, it's the shell (bash) handling the history, not the terminal.

Title:
Gnome terminal omits cmake bootstrap command from bash history

Status in gnome-terminal package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I only had one window opened, and that opened when I went into the
cmake build directory and clicked "Open in terminal". Terminal opened,
and I ran the bootstrap command, only to find there was an error
because I did not install libssl-dev. I ran sudo apt install libssl-
dev, and then I pushed the up button to run the bootstrap again,
however, the terminal went straight to the last command I ran in
  terminal's history BEFORE the " ./bootstrap --
  -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE:STRING=Release" command, which means terminal
omitted the bootstrap command from history when it should have kept
  it.
