Playback problem -- I can't get playback out of my earphone jack

Bug description:
No earphone jack output
I plug it in, and sound keeps coming outta the speakers. Yes I'm
plugging in earphone jack not mic jack.
Works in Windows 7 (its a dual boot system -- Toshiba laptop).
