snd-virmidi should by default blocked to become default card
Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Binary package hint: alsa-base
loading snd-virmidi with the default settings can lead to lots of audio
trouble as it can become the default card (index 0).
It is very unlikely that anyone ever wants the virtual midi device as card 0.
I recommend adding the following line to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf to
prevent this to happen:
# Keep snd-virmidi from being loaded as first soundcard
options snd-virmidi index=-2
