Forgot to mention: this is with Ubuntu 20.04. And since I upgraded my main system 14.04->16.04->18.04->20.04 I also confirmed the brokenness in a VM with a fresh 20.04 setup, just to convince myself that this issue actually happens out-of-the-box.

This makes nautilus-share very confusing since you won't be able to access the shares if they are set with authentication. Users might be stuck thinking file sharing simply doesn't work because of this. Perhaps nautilus-share should have a dialog explaining that a samba password has to be set or have it only with guest access for shares unless the issue with libpam-smbpass is fixed and back in archive.
