Same here. No icon when connecting to a strongswan VPN. journalctl -b 0 shows this entry everytime I connect to the VPN (with different time stamp and different number in brackets each time);

In ubuntu Mate 16 and 18 the default behavior was to change the icon adding a small size lock. In Ubuntu Mate 20, in Traditional Desktop, seems something is missing. When connecting to the VPN, icon changes to a black screen with a forbidden icon (see attachment).
