Is it normal for extensions to be able to crash native gnome/Ubuntu
processes? Seems strange to me.

  This happened after selecting and entering the password of the GDM
  user.

  GDM gives the pass to gnome-shell, and it does not start. I reboot the
  notebook, and it successfully enters gnome-shell
