Hi Tim, The reason that this works when invoking xrandr manually is because it's mirroring the display. By default when you plug it in, it tries to "extend" the desktop to the other monitor. I've just learned (from Sarvatt) that virtual desktop size is restricted to 1600x1600 (configurable through xorg.conf).
Also, from comment #4: > The certification for Maverick was using the integrated GPU chip, since, at > that time, the discrete GPU chip is too new to be > supported, but now Natty is using the discrete one. Because the driver for the integrated GPU don't have the 1600x1600 restriction, spanning the virtual desktop across both monitors would have worked. In this sense, this isn't a true regression. What I think should happen when the virtual desktop size is restricted is to less than the full span of both desktops is that it should clone the monitors when plugged in, and then the key to switch modes can span the desktops with overlap. If you would like, we can change this bug in to a feature request for that functionality. I'm unsure why it works for HDMI. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/869799 Title: [Dell inspiron M5110] no output while external VGA is connected Status in “gnome-settings-daemon” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: no output while external VGA is connected, hdmi output is fine.
