Thank you for your suggestion. However, I believe the change you refer
to is easily configurable in gedit's preferences. (Edit -> Preferences
-> 'Editor' Tab -> 'Create a backup copy..' option

I'm marking this invalid because I'm assuming you weren't aware of the
setting. If that's incorrect or you believe it should be the default,
feel free to re-open the bug.

Title:
gedit automatically creates hidden .txt~ files

Status in “gedit” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
Every time I edit a .txt file with gedit and press "save" it automacally
creates another hidden file with the same name and the extension .txt~ e.g. I
open the file file.txt with gedit, I edit it, I press "save" and then changes
are saved in file.txt and another hidden file with the name file.txt~ is
created. I call these .txt~ files "hidden" because they can only be viewed with
the "ls" command through the terminal. I tried editing .txt files with other
applications like Geany and it just applies all the changes to the original
file without creating any .txt~ file! I believe that it must be a gedit bug,
but I'm not 100% sure. I realized that when I backuped my files in my external
hard disk drive and connected it to a Windows PC and all the .txt~ files just
appeared on the screen! Ever since I remove these .txt~ files through the
terminal!
