Title:
  xdg-open ignores $BROWSER

Status in xdg-utils package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: xdg-utils

This is on Ubuntu 11.04. xdg-open seems to be ignoring the BROWSER
enviroment variable. If i'm not wrong, is using gnome-open, and i
cannot configure gnome-open to use w3m, which is the browser i want to
  use.

Wouldn't be best to honor the BROWSER variable? xdg-open should have a
consistent behaviour and not change between desktops
