The problem was fixed in about:config by changing the preference
focusmanager.testmode from true to false and restarting Firefox. It looks like
the preference was added when I tried to use a custom profile with Selenium
WebDriver:

Title:
Dead keys for French accents not working on Firefox Ubuntu package

Status in firefox package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Hello,

Since at least last year, Firefox from the Ubuntu package fails French
accents that require a combination of keys like ê and ï.
However dead keys work on other programs like Thunderbird or Firefox binary
from Mozilla.

I guess this issue happened after an update of the Firefox Ubuntu
  package, can you fix it?

  Thanks.
