Thanks for the report François. This was previously reported at
https://forum.snapcraft.io/t/snap-thunderbird-plays-no-sounds/23953. I'm
quoting my comment from that thread here:

  Can you share the output of the following command?

    snap connections thunderbird

  Also, if you’re trying to use a custom sound file, it might be that
the snap sandboxing doesn’t allow the application to read that file.
Where is that file located on disk?

  [snap] Thunderbird 78.11 does not play new email sound

Bug description:
  (Was the same before v. 78.11.)

  TB does not play a sound when a new mail incomes, even if the correct option 
is selected.
  Changing from default to custom sound does not change the issue.

  New emails notifications do work as intended, except sound.
