When installed within VirtualBox with Guest Additions the first login prompt is sized 800x600 the second login prompt has dynamic screen resolution so is full screen. With "auto-login" for the user enabled the first 800x600 login prompt is skipped.
So my guess is that the Guest Additions code is run after you get through the first login prompt.
