And I can't reproduce it. For me, the candidate window shows up close to the cursor as expected. (Tried with ibus-mozc; assuming that's what you used too.) Not sure what else to say at this stage.. Well, your proposed fix is not possible to implement. It would result in GTK_IM_MODULE=ibus being set for all GNOME users in both wayland and xorg sessions, and as regards wayland sessions it would result in adverse side effects.
