I am seeing the exactly same behavior as Adi on Ubuntu 22.04. I manually upgraded to Thunderbird 102 via the mozilla ppa and I am seeing the same high CPU usage on mouse hover and delayed animations, which made the UI almost unusable for me. My first guess was also the WebRender as I had to disable it for Thunderbird 91. However, I do use Firefox 105 without problems. So maybe it is indeed a different issue.
