The dark grey square looks like a small window with a shadow. So I think
this might be some application or extension listening for drag-and-drop.
Please logout and retest without any other apps running.
Please also check to see what extensions are installed:
gnome-extensions list
that might be causing the issue.

Bug description:
Hi Ubuntuers,
When I'm using the Gnome default terminal that comes with Ubuntu, the
terminal spawns a black square on the left of the screen while
dragging the mouse to the corner of the screen. At the same time this
square spawn a default gear application icon also spawns in the
task/application bar, when i stop dragging the bug disappear. I
adjunct a screenshot of the bug.
