Public bug reported:
I press super a lot to see progress of other applications or the system time
from activities overview when in a fullscreen application, such as a steam game.
Occasionally the activities overview will not show any applications nor the
desktop, but only the gray background and the search bar (although applications
on the dock will still be visible and selectable, just not interactable other
than audio). The clock and quick settings are the only things that work
normally in this state as not even the activities search bar is responsive. The
only way I've been able to exit is by restarting the computer. I'm going to try
using Xorg to restart gnome next time but I've not tested that yet.
This issue hasn't seemed to occur in any situations other than running full
screen applications. Although, given that I don't often use activities overview
outside of fullscreen apps, that may not be required for the bug to occur.
