Problem still persists as of current distribution (Oneiric 64bit). Remote Desktop Viewer can connect only once in a gdm session. After the first successful session on remote desktop is no longer used and disconnected, further attempts do not even reach the password dialog. The window is all black and nothing else ever happens. The only solution is to switch to another user account on local system and connect from there - then it works. After that session is closed, I can return to the original account and then sometimes it does connect. In my case, since I need both remote desktop and other apps on my machine as well, it's futile to switch there and back again between the accounts. Remote desktop is Windows XP with TightVNC (latest version).
