Well this isn't a bug with Unity at all; I've experienced similar issues
with GNOME Shell and even on GNOME2. It's a GTK bug instead.

One workaround is to click the dropdown and release the mouse button
VERY quickly. If you don't release it quickly (which happens in most
common cases), GTK thinks you've held the mouse button down and were
selecting an option.

Title:
Pidgin "change status" combobox broken under Unity

Status in “gtk+3.0” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Clicking on the change status combobox in Pidgin does nothing. More
precisely, the status list appears and immediately disappears,
  preventing status selection.

Expected behaviour: clicking on the combobox would show a list of
combobox items and allow them to be selected as the new status.

The current workaround is to click, hold the mouse button down, drag
the mouse to the desired status and then let go of the mouse button.
