Title:
Black screen with blinking cursor after upgrading to Ubuntu 24.04

Status in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
After upgrading from Ubuntu 22 to Ubuntu 24.04, sometimes the only
thing that comes up is a dark gray screen with nothing. Other times,
the only thing that comes up is a black screen with a blinking cursor.
Since installing the new version of Ubuntu, the only way I can see the
GUI is if I launch Ubuntu in recovery mode and then reboot. This is
very time consuming and inconvenient when I cannot boot directly into
  Ubuntu.
