Public bug reported:

After last updates, gdm login screen fails to show. With plymouth the system
freezes, without it it remains black and I may go to tty and run commands from
there.
gdm3 status is active. ubuntu-desktop and ubuntu-session are installed.
The only journalctl error that seems to be relevant is:
unix_chkpwd: could not obtain user info (gdm-greeter).

I tried:

1. Purging gdm3 and reinstalling (without it I get working prompt).
2. Purging nvidia proprietary drivers and installing different versions of them.
3. Backing up and removing /home/myusername/./config/dconf.
4. Disabling apparmor.

Nothing works.
lightdm works well, though, so I use it instead.

How can I start debugging this?
