Yes the user interface here is less than ideal. The Nvidia 575 driver was official for a while, but is now replaced by 580.
To recover from situations like this, I personally use: 1. sudo apt purge '*nvidia*-5*' 2. Reboot. 3. Use 'Additional Drivers' to install a new driver. 4. Note that 575 isn't even one of the available options there. I don't know why 575 is installed. I did not ask for it. Additionally I have a warning icon in the tray which pops up a message saying: "An error occured. Please run the package manager from the right click menu or apt-get from a terminal to see what is wrong. The error message was: ' Unknown error: <class: 'KeyError'> The cache has no package named 'libllvm20:i386'")' This usually means your installed packages have unmet dependencies." Despite all of this nothing seems to have actually stopped working, including apt, which looks like it would perform an upgrade if I asked it to. Needless to say I have absolutely no idea how to reproduce.
