I would think that the sound menu would handle this fine. I suspect this
is by design. Please set status and unnassign if approprite.

No indicator support
Status in “indicator-sound” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
On precise Rhythmbox does not display any indicator. When closing the
window via the window manager music continues playing without giving
the user any hint how to stop it. One needs to open rhythmbox again
and then use music->quit to stop the playback.
