I noticed that the default Print to File in Thunderbird, Evince, and Chromium is to PDF, but Firefox defaults to PostScript. It seems that each application can set different printing defaults.

Although I'm a big fan of PostScript (even having programmed in it), I think PDF should be the default now since: (1) the resulting files are smaller (being compressed) (2) standard desktop tooling handles PDF widely (3) almost everyone knowns what a PDF file is (whereas the same is not true of PostScript). I think (3) is the most important aspect here.
