Bug 930672 has been marked as a duplicate, so I just wanted to point out that this most recently occurred for me using the i386 20120211 Precise Ubuntu iso after installation, then installing 'gnome-session-fallback', logging out and choosing Classic (No effects) from the login menu.
Anytime I add or remove "applets" to the panel I get this panel crash, but the panel comes back with no action on my part.
