I don't like this proposal, the highlighted search is there on purpose as you
can just have a look where the search was. This is totally intentional and
because of this we provide a way to clear the highlighted text. You can use the
menuitem or control+shift+k. I'm closing this as WONTFIX. Thanks anyway for
reporting this bug.

Title:
Gedit find dialog makes it difficult to clear highlighted text
Status in Light-Weight Text Editor for Gnome:
Won't Fix
Status in One Hundred Paper Cuts:

Status in “gedit” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Problem:
The text that becomes highlighted when searching for text in gedit is
difficult to unhighlight. This is annoying.
STR:
1. Bring up the find dialog
2. Type a string in the text box and click Find
3. Notice all instances of the string become highlighted
4. bring up the find dialog again
5. Delete everything in the text box
6. Notice the Find button is now disabled, so click Close
Expected results:
There should be nothing highlighted, as the textbox in the find dialog
was cleared.
Actual results:
The original string is still highlighted.
Also opening up the find dialog a third time, the string is still present.
Notes:
In the menu bar there is Search > Clear Highlight (Shift+Ctrl+K)
however after years of using Ubuntu/gedit I only discovered this today
when I went to find the upstream bug for this.
