This problem still exists in precise and may have something to do with the path that is returned by the file save dialog. For example, if you double-click a libreoffice file in nautilus, it is possible to make edits and save the file again. Files opened in this way use a path that goes through "/home/$USER/.gvfs/sftp on servername". It also possible to save new files by navigating to the .gvfs folder rather than using the "sftp on servername" link in the file dialog. What fails are any saves that use the 'sftp on servername' shortcut. I suspect that this is because in this case libreoffice gets an "sftp://servername/path/to/file" link, instead of a local file path that goes through the .gvfs folder, and it doesn't know how to handle it.
