In my case I think it's related to the graphic card an Nvidia Geforce GTS250. There are some problems with this card. First the Nomodeset option is needed to install Ubuntu both in Oneiric and Precise. Then I have to boot in recovery mode to be able to login and get the system working, else I get the corrupt login screen. When the proprietary Nvidia driver is installed the system behaves OK.
