Has the "Online accounts" feature been removed. I installed a fresh copy of 12.04 and it no longer exists in the user menu or the system settings. I have now gone and deleted my "online accounts" which is still present on my 64bit machine. I have been working on this install since 12.04 was released and added my accounts as per normal IN empathy and now they working. I did try this the other day but made no difference.
I suspect the online accounts feature was causing an issue hence why it has been completely removed.
