closing the ubuntu bug, it's a corner case, not requested a lot and we don't have the resources to work on that

However I have also had problems when the /tmp directory has more than 5000 files. The system goes very slowly and seems to stop caching data. Perhaps the gnome-settings-daemon could alert the user if `ls /tmp/ | wc -l` is greater than 5000? There may be a more elegant solution, but rebooting seems to help when there are too many files in /tmp, so perhaps the dialog could suggest rebooting.
