Acutally it doesn't work in lucid.
Every now and then my system reverts to right handed.
When in a non-working state my xinput looks like this:

Title:
left-handed mouse no longer working
Status in “gnome-settings-daemon” package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Status in “xserver-xorg-input-mouse” package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-mouse
Since upgrading to Karmic, the left-handed setting for the mouse
buttons no longer work.
It could be cause by e.g. gnome-settings-daemon also, but I have no
way to verify this for sure.
