Setting to Triaged, even now NM doesn't appear to have support for wpa-
essid. Marking as Wishlist for when I have... the few seconds it will
actually need to implement this.
essid should be handled the same way as ssid, it's essentially the same
piece of data.
FWIW, that's all around line 95 in
src/settings/plugins/ifupdown/parser.c. A matter of about one line
change :)

Bug description:
Binary package hint: network-manager
This is related to bug 337085 which was triggered by using wpa-essid
in /etc/network/interfaces instead of wpa-ssid. The "ifup" command
supports wpa-essid just fine, so NM probably ought to be able to
handle it as well.
