No Sound with Ubuntu 11.10 & ASUS EEE PC 1000HE Netbook

Bug description:
I've installed Ubuntu 11.10 using WUBI/WIndows XP, and have also run
it from a USB Key.
In both cases, there is NO SOUND on my ASUS EEE PC 1000HE.
I've verified that sound volume is all the way UP, NOT MUTED in sound
settings.
I have also verified that the Sound card IS being detected by issuing the
commands APLAY -l and LSPCI from Terminal.
Sound card is detected as Intel ALC269 Analog / N10/ICH 7 Family High
Definition Audio Controller.
APLAY and LSPCI outputs are listed below:
