This happens to me, but not only in thunderbird. It happens to me out of thunderbird, at random (however the worst, eg installing updates) times, and really bugs me. Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit.

There doesn't seem to be a specific message or action that causes the logout. I have noticed that Thunderbird can on occasion freeze but it does not gray-out as most programs do when they are doing heavy processing. I have not noticed any correlation between the freezing and the logouts. Also, logouts do not occur when other programs are used and Thunderbird is not active. I do have the Lightning plugin installed, but I rarely use it in actual practice.
