Firefox blew away my Gnome classic (no effects) Kubuntu session

Bug description:
Was in a new session on my laptop, running only Evolution mail and the System
Monitor when I selected to run Firefox from the Applications > Internet menu.
Upon doing so, the screen went black with only the animated wait pointer
working and, within 10 seconds, I found myself viewing the main login screen
with the session I had only started less than 5 minutes earlier blown away.
On logging in again, to a Gnome Classic (no effects) session, running Firefox
first, then Evolution, the problem did not recur.
