I also tested this using evince version 3.3.90-0ubuntu2 on Precise and was unable to recreate the bug when running compiz. A sample pdf would help here.

I was reading a PDF file when suddenly F10 key was pressed; the whole desktop except mouse pointer froze. Fortunately I was able to switch to console using Alt-F{1-7}. After killing evince, desktop is usable again. I was able to reproduce this bug using nvidia and intel driver, using single and dual monitor configuration.
