I'll close this bug as the looping was definitely caused by gnome-
settings-daemon not being present. If you are still having the blank
login screen can you open a new bug? Please attach lightdm.log again.

Title:
  Loop upon launching in Lubuntu

Status in “lightdm” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
Using the most up-to-date release of Lubuntu, lightdm loops when it is
run, either by default, or with 'sudo service lightdm start'.

The loop consists of brief flashes of text, (too fast to read, but it
looks like the usual 'starting bluetooth....[OK]' thing), then my
mouse appears, then my disk reads furiously, then my mouse disappears,
  and back to square one.

I don't really know what's causing it, as (presumably the same
version) in Ubuntu it works fine.

  Debugging help welcome.
