I viewed several PDF files online, these are local walks, and consist
of a map page with the route added in red, and a text description
  page.

Viewing through Firefox 2 (left-clicking the link) displays perfectly
OK. Downloading to HDD and displaying in Adobe 8 also displays OK. But
in Evince the downloaded files have a "brick pattern" of dotted red
lines over the map image, covering large parts of it.

  Properties show creation info as:
  Pagemaker 6.5
  Acrobat Distiller 4.0 for Macintosh
  PDF-1.3
