I have an Alienware M15x with an Nvidia card and I use nvidia-settings for switching my display to a monitor connected to my VGA port. When I enable by monitor (on the VGA adaptor) using unity (3d), the display blanks out or some garbled display appears. After 15 seconds, things reset and are back to normal. Switching display works well if I fallback to unity 2d.
