Peter, first completely (including the password) configure your hidden wifi network connection via 'Edit Connections' in networkmanager. Once you have done this you can connect via the commandline with: sudo iwconfig eth1 essid 'your hidden networkname' . This assumes that the wifi interface is called 'eth1'. If this is not the case substitute 'eth1' with the interface name you found with typing iwconfig in the terminal.
