I attached a screenshot to show one other odd detail that may or may not
be related. In the upper left corner, you can see a yellow star. That
is from the VoIP app Twinkle, it is a Qt app. It is supposed to be in
the menu bar. It was originally in there when I first installed it
about month ago, then it started showing in the upper left corner, just
below the menu bar. Occasionally it returns to the menu bar when I log
in again. My vague recollection is that the problem does not happen
when the star is in the menu bar, but that could be wrong.

Also, I'm currently posting while the problem is happening. I can click
on the various text fields of this window, but I cannot click on
anything else or switch to different windows. I also cannot scroll this
window with the mouse wheel. I also cannot click on the window
click/minimize/maximize buttons, but I can click the Post Comment
button.

Title:
windows stop intermittently responding to mouse control

Status in “lightdm” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:

I inquired about this on #ubuntu, so I'll just copy the log here:

(04:02:57 PM) _hc: hey all, I'm a long time Debian (since '98) and Ubuntu
(since '06) user and I'm having a maddening issue with my Oneiric setup.
Basically, every 30-300 minutes, something freaks out and I cannot move or
select windows with my mouse, I can sometimes alt-tab between windows when this
happens but not always. Sometimes it goes away, mostly I have to reboot to fix
it. This happens in GNOME Classic/gnome-wm, GNOME Classic/compiz, Unity 2D,
and GNOME sessions. I can't figure it out, its driving me crazy
(04:06:22 PM) rigved: _hc: i think that there nothing common between all
those sessions, other than X itself.
  (04:06:32 PM) _hc: rigved: compiz?
(04:06:54 PM) _hc: rigved: no, I guess not, since I used gnome-wm... that's
why its driving me so crazy
(04:08:27 PM) rigved: _hc: you mean that you are using gdm and not lightdm?
(04:08:49 PM) _hc: rigved: I'm using lightdm
(04:08:49 PM) rigved: _hc: i thought that Unity 2D does not use compiz...
(04:09:17 PM) _hc: rigved: right, nevermind, in my original GNOME Classic
session, I was using gnome-wm with no compiz
(04:09:56 PM) _hc: rigved: then I changed it to use compiz, and the bug is
still there, but a little different: basically I can't alt-tab thru the windows
after it freaks out with GNOME-Classic/compiz
(04:10:37 PM) rigved: _hc: when you say freak out, you mean that mouse is
disabled, right?
(04:10:47 PM) _hc: nope mouse works fine
(04:10:59 PM) _hc: its just clicking on things mostly doesn't work
(04:11:53 PM) _hc: rigved: everything continues to run and work fine, I just
can't use the mouse to move windows, select windows, or click things in windows
that do not have focus
  (04:12:28 PM) rigved: _hc: ok.
(04:12:29 PM) _hc: often, if a window has focus after the freakout, I can
still close it with the mouse
(04:13:12 PM) rigved: _hc: and is this machine a laptop?
  (04:13:23 PM) rigved: _hc: ok.
(04:13:26 PM) _hc: yes, Macbook Pro 3rd gen
(04:13:42 PM) _hc: I was running maverick on it very nicely, then upgraded to
natty then oneiric in a day
(04:13:45 PM) _hc: then this started happening
(04:15:10 PM) rigved: _hc: this looks like a bug. maybe it has got something
to do with the upgrade. maverick to oneiric is a gnome 2 to gnome 3 upgrade.
(04:15:42 PM) _hc: rigved: yeah, seems likely. I didn't have natty on long
enough to know if this happened there
(04:16:51 PM) rigved: _hc: i think you should file a bug report against
lightdm, cause that seems common to all.
(04:17:29 PM) _hc: rigved: Ok, will do
(04:17:38 PM) _hc: rigved: any troubleshotting ideas?
(04:18:21 PM) rigved: _hc: i can only think of looking through the logs to
find any culprit application
(04:18:59 PM) _hc: rigved: I've tried running without certain applications,
at this point it would have to be gnome-terminal or firefox, since those are
the only two that I really always run
